commenting to note i've just realised the 'lost in the fire' thing could have played off the torch/flame metaphor more directly. damn.

I'm 32, and have noticed myself drifting away from my social circles since I bought a house and got married.

I kinda just sit at home and do nothing when I'm not working. Outside of a post-work cigar lounge meetup every friday, I've lost interest in most other social activities outside of my marriage.

I don't think I'm unhappy or depressed. I just feel like I achieved everything I wanted to so far, so I have nothing to yearn for.

Women are literally schizophrenic, split-brained, on this. On the one hand they want their men to have (suitable) male friends; on the other hand, men are Not Allowed to have the male-only third places in which such friendships can take root and grow.

At each end of the male lifespan, Boy Scouts USA MUST BE MADE Scouting America, and Men's Sheds, a British/Aussie/NZ attempt to provide retired men their own third place, MUST BE MADE "Community Spaces", because men CANNOT BE ALLOWED their own third place.

In between, of course, all sports clubs must admit women, as must all shared-interest clubs of whatever kind.

But of course it is MEN'S OWN FAULT that they give up trying to have male friends and male modes of friendship.

This seems like your 'Moloch' essay, lamenting that all values must be discarded except $PRIME_DIRECTIVE.
